Glossary of Terms for Specialty Polyethylene Sheeting and Tubing

ASTM E-1745 - ASTM standard specification for plastic water vapor barriers.

Coextruded Film - A multilayered polyethylene sheet produced by utilizing two or more extruders to melt and deliver a steady volumetric throughput of different viscous plastics to a single extrusion head. Alternative Terms: Multi Layered Polyethylene Sheeting, Multi Layered Plastic Sheeting.

Flame Retardant Jacketing - A component part to flex duct used to hold the insulation and scrim around the duct core as well as acting as a barrier to stop air leakage and hold the product together. Alternative terms: Flame Duct Tubing, Flame Retardant Tubing, Flame Retardant Film, U.L. Certified Tubing, Coextruded Tubing.

LDPE - Low-density polyethylene, defined by a density range of 0.910–0.940 g/cm3.  LDPE is used for both rigid containers and plastic film applications such as plastic bags and film wrap.

LLDPE - Linear low-density polyethylene, defined by a density range of 0.915–0.925 g/cm3. LLDPE is used primarily for plastic film applications due to its toughness and flexibility. Product examples include liners, multilayer, composite and agricultural films.

Polyethylene - A thermoplastic long chain polymer produced by combining the ingredient monomer ethylene.

Polyethylene Sheeting - A plastic sheet product supplied in rolls of various width and used for a variety of commercial and industrial applications. Alternative terms for Polyethylene Sheeting: poly sheeting, plastic sheeting, polyethylene film.

Shrink Sheeting - A polymer plastic film that when heated in a heat tunnel or with a hand held heat gun shrinks tightly over whatever it is covering.

Stretch Hooder Film - A specialty polyethylene tubing made from shrink sheeting used for the protection of palletized materials. Alternative Term: Stretch Hooder Tubing

U.L. 181 - Underwriters Laboratories standard for Factory-Made Air Ducts and Air Connectors.

U.S.P.S. Poly Wrap - A polyethylene film certified to meet specifications set by the United States Postal Service. Alternative Term: U.S.P.S. Approved Film.

Vapor Barrier - Any material, typically plastic sheeting or foil sheet, that resists diffusion of moisture through walls, ceilings and floors of buildings or of packaging.
